Today was one of the most inspiring days ever for me in my art class. A few days ago my professor told the class to bring in something for "Show and tell" (Extra Credit).

I decided to bring in the opening art of Elfenlied (As seen bellow) and she displayed all of the pictures on a HUGE projector in front of the class for over 20 minutes talking about  Gustav Klimt's artwork and what japan had transformed it in. Yes, everyone was laughing and loving the boobs on the big screen (Including me!) but besides that, I learned alot about Gustav Klimt and what the REAL meaning behind those opening art scenes show us for elfenlied.

Gustav Klimt's artwork was highly criticized to have a lot of pornographic content. For example. #4 (The last one) the woman (Lucy) is actually masturbating. Now I don't know if japan knew that about the picture they transformed, but effectively, thats a picture of Lucy masturbating. (This is NOT a horrible thing, its art, its what it is, and its great).

Lucy (The woman he painted) also jumped into a river and killed herself because she couldn't love the man she loved. Now, this is a huge coincidence and maybe a likely occurrence between the lucy/kohta/yuka situation (If the series went further). Again, not sure if Japan made that connection.

Below are the images i'm talking about:

Three important things learned from this:

1) Lucy is displayed  masturbating on the fourth image, effectively the only soft core pornographic material displayed on elfenlied (Whether it was intentional or not).

2) Gustav Klimt the author of the inspiration on the elfenlied artwork, was considered a pornographic artist that was no so well in his head.

3) The woman Lucy is based on in the drawings kills herself because she cant love/be with the person she loves. Almost sound like a familiar foreshadowing with the lucy/kohta thing?

I had no idea either.
I really want to spin on about this, but I've thought of nothing in the 10 hours I've been gone...

Art is wonderful Smiley

I recommend you a lovely novel called 'The Pornographer of Vienna'. It's a slightly romanticised version of Egon Schiele's life and features the warm, hearty character of Klimt in the background for most of the way through.

I have think that this were common knowledge?
Do the people dont have old Gustav anymore in Artclass? Have anyone seen the nice film with Malcovich as Klimt?

I love the Paintings of Klimt, in facts he was one of the reason I went to artuniversity.

Well, I don't consider it common knowledge, my elfenlied forum'ers had never heard of this (Could be a age thing), and I'm not sure what universities offer what sort of curriculum. But if you didn't know it before, you know it now! Just to be specific, I learned this in a community college ART 101 class.

I had Klimt in general art class at high/secondry school, and at home but...
Some places in England just get told to draw without aim in school, so it didn't suprise me that it wasn't common knowledge in America.

Don't directly say that somewhere has more culture, that's just asking for a hot flame...

I'm from Europe.
I had to learn of Leonardo and Michelangelo and there's probably some one else, all on my own.
Like I said, in art class we drew stick figures and had paper ball fights. We didn't learn about art...

Most public schools I know of elicit to "teach" art by just basically subsidizing kids of art material expenses (with crappy stuff, mind you) and letting them have almost free reign under certain assignment guide lines, as most people idealize the process as being "creative" and there being no "right".

As a result, art history and classical teaching methods are basically not taught at all until you get into art school/college/university where it hits you like a rock.

Additionally, most non-arts majors are unlikely to take at arts course in their university/college career....
